Physical DescriptionPhysical DescriptionPrint reproduction of cartoon drawing. German clipping. A wooden horse (“Cypross”) has many men in it, including a giant man (identifiable as Makarios III). In front of the horse are several men (“NATO”) including LBJ, a man (identifiable as Ludwig Erhard) and another man consider climbing up ladders (“Commonwealth” and “NATO”) into the horse. Another man (identifiable as Charles de Gaulle) sits on a rock looking away from the horse. From the inside of the horse, a man with a UK flag yells, “Help”. Behind the horse, an army with stars on their shields is approaching. A small piece of paper “14.II.64.(ZW)” adhered to lower right. Caption: “Das cypriotische Pferd [The Cypriot Horse]”.
Historical NoteThe Cyprus Crisis of 1963-1964 was a conflict in Cyprus regarding the representation of the Greek Cypriot majority and the Turkish Cypriot minority in the government. In 1963, Cypriot President Archbishop Makarios III proposed thirteen amendments to the constitution regarding representation that would have favored the Greek Cypriot majority.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson personally, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1970.
