Physical DescriptionFooted dish-shaped purse with solid gold base and openwork top; decorated with 8 raised flowers with gold bead centers. Large flower at the peak/center of the hinged lid, and Ethiopian seal. LIned with red-orange satin visible through the openwork. Gold chain handle.
Historical NoteThis round purse made of gold was given to President Johnson and Lady Bird Johnson by His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I, Emperor of Ethiopia on February 14, 1967, during an informal visit to Washington, D.C.

Custodial History NoteThis item was a gift from a foreign official to President Lyndon B. Johnson and First Lady Lady Bird Johnson during the Johnson administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives on January 1969 for deposit with the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum.
