Physical DescriptionPhotographic portrait of Pope Paul VI. Color with white mat imprinted with the Vatican Seal. Photograph imprinted in lower right by photographer. Enclosed in (B) silver frame with beveled inner edge and ornate bead on outer front edge. Relief silver crest at top and relief of leaves and berries either side. Wooden back. Artist signature at lower center: [illegible].

Historical NotePope Paul VI gave this photograph to Lyndon Johnson when he visited New York City on October 4, 1965 for the United Nations General Assembly. This was the first time a pope had ever visited the United States, but at the time the United States did not formally recognize Vatican City, considering it a separation between church and state.

Custodial History NoteThis item was a gift from a foreign official to President Lyndon B. Johnson during his term in office. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives on January 1969 for deposit with the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum.
