Physical Description
Physical DescriptionBronze coin dated to Roman Procurator Pontius Pilatus. The obverse of the coin shows a curved wooden staff (lituus) and Greek text. The reverse of the coin shows laurel leaves surrounding the date (LIZ = Year 30).
Historical NoteThis coin was part of a set of Roman Judea (Ancient Hebrew) coins presented to President Johnson by Prime Minister Levi Eshkol of Israel during an official visit to the LBJ Ranch on January 7-8, 1968. Minted during the procuratorship of Pontius Pilate (26-36 A.D.), they were widely used and not exceptionally rare today. Their popularity stems from their association with Pontius Pilate, the man who conducted the trial and ordered the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
