Physical Description
Physical DescriptionBronze coin dated to Hebrew King Alexander Yannacus. The obverse of the coin shows and anchor and Greek text "Basileos Alexandrou" (King Alexander). The reverse shows an eight-spoke wheel or starburst.
Historical NoteThis coin was part of a set of Hasmonean (Ancient Hebrew) coins presented to President Johnson by Prime Minister Levi Eshkol of Israel during an official visit to the LBJ Ranch on January 7-8, 1968. Minted during the reign of King Alexander Jannaeus (103-76 B.C.), coins like this were referred to as "Widow's Mites" due to their low denomination. They were widely used in everyday transactions.

Custodial History NoteThis item was a gift from a foreign official to President Lyndon B. Johnson during his term in office. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives on January 1969 for deposit with the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum.
