Historical NoteThis jhula (swing) was given to Lady Bird Johnson by Her Excellency Indira Gandhi, Prime Minister of India on April 26, 1966, after a state visit to Washington, D.C. The swing is typical of the Indian holiday Jhulan Yatra, practiced by followers of Krishna, and inspired by the fabled romance of Krishna and his consort Radha passing time swinging together and celebrating with freinds in the groves of Vrindavan during the cool monsoon season. The festival is commemorated by displays of these decorated swings, song, and dance.Additional Details
