Physical DescriptionPhysical DescriptionCharm/pendant. Enameled coat of arms of the Hawaiian Kingdom on a gold disk. The coat of arms is flanked by 2 gold figures and on an open white/red drape topped with a crown. Emanating from the enameled center are bas-relief rays with inscription: "UA MAU KE EAOKA AINA I KA PONO.", "1", "AKAHI DALA", "D". Engraved in script on the back: "LBJ", "Hawaii", "Robert E. Van Dyke", "April 15, 1968". Loop and ring at the top. Stamped: "D.B", "14 K".
Historical NoteThis pendant with the great seal of the Hawaiian kingdom was sent to President Johnson at his hotel during a visit to Hawaii in April 1968. The state motto seen on the seal roughly translates to “The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness.”Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
