Physical DescriptionPhysical DescriptionPendant. Bronze medal with bas-relief of Abraham Lincoln as in Lincoln Memorial on obverse. Inscribed: "Freedom March Commemoration / Washington, D.C. / August 28, 1963." Reverse: bas-relief of Lincoln Memorial. Inscribed " 'Above the clouds of Ignorance, Narrowness and Selfishness…' Booker T. Washington. / 'Testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure…' Abraham Lincoln." Rigid hanging ring. Marked on obverse: "(c) FMC" and on reverse: "Freedom Medal Co." Received through mail January 28, 1964.
Historical NoteThis bronze medallion was sent to President Johnson by a constituent in January 1964. It commemorates the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom which was held on August 26, 1963.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson personally, until the President donated it to the LBJ Presidential Library in 1970.
