Physical DescriptionPhysical DescriptionGold gimmel ring comprising 3 interlocking gold bands. When the three bands are closed together, the top and bottom bands, representing open male and female hands, clasp together across a heart attached to the center band.
Historical NoteThis ring was given to Lady Bird Johnson by His Excellency Modibo Keita, President of the Republic of Mali, presented through the State Department. A gimmel ring is a ring with two or more hoops that fit together to form one ring and was often used as a betrothal ring. This ring uses an early 15th century Malian design.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThis item was a gift from a foreign official to President Lyndon B. Johnson during his term in office. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives on January 1969 for deposit with the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum.
