Physical DescriptionTempera painting of the Virgin Mary, Joseph, and angels tending Jesus. Angels and shepherds are in the background. The Nativity is located within architectural ruins.
Inscriptions and MarkingsPlaque inscription: "Nativity - German School 15th C”.
Historical NotePope Paul VI gave this tempera painting to Lyndon Johnson when he visited Vatican City on December 23, 1967 as a part of his Around the World Trip after attending Harold Holt's funeral in Australia.

Custodial History NoteThis item was a gift from a foreign official to President Lyndon B. Johnson during his term in office. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives on January 1969 for deposit with the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum.
