Frame 1: A man (“Schwarzer Soldat [Black Soldier]”) says, “Massa, ich komm’ für mein extra Bounty von $300, welche der Congreß mir gibt. [I come for my extra bounty of $300 that Congress is giving me.]”. Another man (“Zahlmeister [Paymaster]”) says “All’recht lieber Mann, hierist’s Geld [Alright dear man, here’s the money]”. Frame 2: A man on crutches (Weißer Soldat [White Soldier]”) says, “ich komm für mein extra Bounty von $100.”. The paymaster says, “Es ist mir sehr leid, aber der Congreß hat kein Geld für dich verwilligt. [I’m very sorry, but Congress hasn’t approved any money for you.]”. Historical NoteThe bounty system paid cash bonuses to soldiers that enlisted during the Civil War as opposed to people who were drafted. In 1861, the bounty was $100 for enlisting for three years, but in 1863, the bounty was raised to $300 for a three-year term.Additional Details
