Physical Description
Physical DescriptionCartoon removed from November 10, 1888 Judge magazine. Anti-Democratic cartoon. Frame 1: A man (“Democratic Orator”) speaks to a crowd which includes a man in a suit with a top hat and cigar, a man in a military uniform, and a man wearing clergyman clothing. In the crowd, someone holds a sign (“Cleveland & Thurman & Spoils.”). The orator says, “What does the Republican party, the low-lived adherents of which are assembled in yonder hall across the street, what does that offer you for your vote? What? Why, f-r-e-e W-h-i-s-k-e-y! And now-”. Frame 2: The large crowd tries to move through the door at once to get into a room (“Republican Rally. Harrison & Mort… Protection”). Additional text at lower center: “(Fifty seconds after the aforesaid speech.) This represents the door leading to the room in which the adherents are assembled. The confused mass in door-way represents the Democratic meeting, which has come en masse to investigate the truth of the ‘Free Whiskey’ offer.”. Caption: "A campaign reminiscence.". Artist signature lower right: “Hamilton”.
Historical NoteIn 1888, Republican Benjamin Harrison ran for president against incumbent Democrat Grover Cleveland. One of the largest issues in the election was the McKinley tariff, which was supported by Republicans because it protected American industries and opposed by Democrats because it led to high prices. Cleveland won the popular vote, but Harrison won the electoral college.
