Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. A man ("Hoople") sits on a bench and says “Egad, Fogarty, how deplorable! Those bottles and cans besmirch the escutcheon of our fair land! -Hak-kaff!- They never decompose and soon all American will be hip-deep in them! Somebody should do something about this litter menace!” to Policeman Fogarty. Fogarty says “Aw, it’s a lost cause major - especially since the advent of the no-deposit bottle! The park department boys truck a load of them out every night - but there’s a new crop of empties in the morning!" Caption: “Glass and Aluminum are Forever”. Artist signature lower left: "Bill Freyse”. Also printed lower left: “Bill reuse”. Also printed lower left: “11-1”. Also printed in lower center: “©1965 by NEA, Inc. T.M. Reg. U.S. Pat. Off.”
Historical NotePresident Johnson signed laws protecting the environment, including urban environments. Lady Bird was also very involved in beautification such as the Highway Beautification Act and the Beautification Project.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
