Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. A hand lays down a card with (“Under Sec’y of State Katzenbach”). Some cards (“Under Sec'y of State Ball”, “Under Sec'y Political Affairs Rostow”, and “Deputy Under Sec'y Political Affairs Kohler”) are already on the table. Caption: “White House Solitaire”. Artist signature lower right: "Alexander”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower center: [red] “55.5” “Phila Evening Bulletin”. Stamped at lower center: [red] "F. O. Alexander P. O. Box #262 Jenkintown, PA 19045". Handwritten at lower right: “700” “Fri Ed Page” “3 col Fri AM” “9-23-66”.
Historical NoteAfter the assassination of John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson kept most of his cabinet. Some notable members of Johnson's cabinet were Secretary of State Dean Rusk, Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara, Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy (succeeded by Nicolas Katzenbach in 1964), and Secretary of the Treasury Henry H. Fowler. In 1966, Under Secretary of State George Ball was succeeded by Katzenbach. Johnson also created new cabinet positions such as the Secretary of Transportation and the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. In 1968, several key cabinet members resigned causing the need for new appointments to the made.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
