Historical NoteThe Housing and Urban Development Act of 1965 expanded funding for federal housing, gave rent subsidies to elderly and disabled people, helped veterans get mortgages, and funded low-income housing, water and sewer facilitates, community centers, and beautification. Also in 1965, Johnson created the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
