Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. Drawing of LBJ talking and gesturing is surrounded by prints of 6 LBJ-related cartoons. Clockwise starting from bottom left, Frame 1: An eagle with the head of LBJ. Frame 2: LBJ attempts to lasso a donkey with a rope (“‘68 politics”), but his foot is being lassoed by another rope (“Vietnam”). The top of the Capitol building (“Congress”) is in the background. Frame 3: LBJ stretches over a gorge (“credibility gap”) between two cliffs (“Viet” and “Nam”). An elephant jumps on him. Frame 4: LBJ sits at his desk while a monkey with the face of a man (identifiable as Ho Chi Minh) on his back wraps his tail around his neck and hits his head. Additional text at upper center: “Years of the Monkey”. Frame 5: LBJ climbs the capitol building carrying some papers (“Record bills”). Frame 6: LBJ pulls a wagon (“JFK’s program”) while the spirit of JFK looks over him. Artist signature lower center: "Dobbins January 1965 Boston Herald-Traveler”.

Historical NoteLyndon Johnson liked political cartoons of himself and invited political cartoonists and other press correspondents to his ranch for barbecues in 1964.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
