Historical NoteIn April 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference led the Birmingham Campaign to protest segregation in Birmingham, Alabama. The police were violent to the protestors, many of whom were children, and used fire hoses and attack dogs on them. This was televised and brought global attention to segregation in the south. While protesting, King was arrested and wrote the “Letter from Birmingham Jail” urging readers to break unjust laws and commit civil disobedience.
