Historical NoteThe Civil Rights Act of 1960 made it illegal to prevent someone from registering to vote. While the act was not very effective, it provided proof for voter disenfranchisement and paved the way for the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
