Historical NoteOn July 2, 1964, President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act to end discrimination based on race, religion, color, sex, and national origin. It banned segregation and discrimination in schools, employment, public facilities, and public accommodations. Sit-ins were a common type of protest.
