In front of the Capitol, the Supreme Court Building, and the White House, cowboy LBJ quickly points ("beat G.O.P. to the draw") a gun made of rolled paper ("Sen. Johnson's Civil Rights Bill"). Caption: “The Fastest Gun!”. Artist signature lower left: "Hy Rosen”.

Historical NoteAlthough the Republicans were in the White House in the 1950s, it was the Democratic party that controlled the Senate. Using this position of strength, Johnson, as majority leader, worked with and led legislators in the passage ofthe 1957 Civil Rights Bill-- the first civil rights act since Reconstruction.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
