Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ looks at his hand ("Shaker's cramp"). LBJ is dressed as a pin cushion (“The National Pen Cushion") and has many pens stuck through him ("No national protection of an elephant hide"). LBJ has his nose cut off ("How you would look with a button nose"). LBJ eats a fruit (“Texas grapefruit”) that squirts in his eyes ("...Not biting back"). Caption: “May 18, 1968”. Artist signature lower right: "John Riedell”.
Historical NoteOn May 18, 1968, President Johnson hosted members of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists at the White House.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
