Historical NoteWilliam Proxmire was elected Senator of Wisconsin in 1957 to fill the seat caused by Joseph McCarthy’s death. He was a Democrat that often voted independently. When this cartoon was made, Senator Johnson was the Majority Leader.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
