Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ tries to cut the grass ("Vietnam Costs") with a smoking lawn mower ("Defense Budget"). Caption: “In the Rough”. Artist signature lower right: "Borgstedt”. A small piece of paper “King Features Syndicate, Inc., 1967.” adhered to lower right.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower right: "To 'LBJ' with best wishes for cutting that grass! Sincerely, Doug Borgstedt". Handwritten at lower right: “6/16/67”.
Historical NoteThe Vietnam War cost an estimated $700,000,000 in 1965, $15,119,000,000 in 1966, $17,161,000,000 in 1967, and $19,278,000,000 in 1968. All this government spending from the war and Great Society, as well as a tax cut to increase spending by consumers and businesses, led to inflation.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
