Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ holds a paper ("Budget") and looks at stockings hung on mantle. There are four small stockings ("Education” “Housing” “Poor” “Cities") and one huge stocking ("Military"). Caption: “Well, It's That Time of Year!”. Artist signature lower left: "Crawford NEA ‘66”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten across the bottom: [blue] "To President Johnson, best wishes, Bill Crawford". Handwritten at lower left: [strikethrough] [red] [illegible]. Handwritten at lower center: [red] “2-3 col” “1-2 col” “373” “576”. Handwritten at lower right: [blue] “(Stockings)”.
Historical NoteThe Vietnam War elicited a lot of criticism for its high cost of life, financial costs, and diplomatic costs. Because of Vietnam War spending, the Great Society programs needed to be cut back.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
