Historical NoteWhen Lyndon B. Johnson signed the 1964 Revenue Act, a tax cut initially proposed by John F. Kennedy that decreased income taxes, and refused to raise taxes, spending by consumers and businesses increased. Along with government spending, all of this increase of demand led to inflation. Everett Dirksen was a Republican senator from Illinois who was the Senate Minority Leader during Lyndon Johnson’s presidency. He favored American involvement in Vietnam. Adam Clayton Powell was House Representative from New York. He was chairman of the Education and Labor Committee, but had to leave from the committee in 1967 due to corruption charges.Additional Details
