Historical NoteThe Vietnam War elicited a lot of criticism for its high cost of life, financial costs, and diplomatic costs. Because of Vietnam War spending, the Great Society programs needed to be cut back. In 1968, Lyndon B. Johnson was eligible for this second term as president.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
