Physical Description
Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ, dressed as a hunter, smiles and walks away from an elephant with a tusk ("Economy in Govt.") over his shoulder. The elephant in the background has only one tusk. Artist signature lower right: "© 1964 Mauldin Chicago Sun-Times".
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten across bottom: "For President Johnson with regards Bill Mauldin January, 1964". Handwritten at lower right: "374 585 5992" "F14".
Historical NoteIn 1964, Lyndon Johnson released his economic plan to address concerns of overspending, a common criticism from the Republican Party. Once he addressed the issue, the Republican Party could no longer use it as a talking point, thus taking one of its “tusks” used to attack the administration away.
