Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ sits at a desk in front of a chalkboard, and smiles down at a group of children ("Operation Head Start"). He shows the children a piece of paper ("A+ continued and expanded program for the future"). Two book on his desk are titled "School Dropouts" and "How to Prevent It". Caption reads: "Good Marks from an Old Schoolmaster!". Artist signature lower right: "Eric Atlanta Journal".
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower right: "With sincerest best wishes".
Historical NoteOperation Head Start was a Great Society summer program begun in 1965 that served children from poor families. It provided children with medical care, meals, and access to museums and libraries. Instead of focusing on school subjects, Operation Head Start was about promoting curiosity and self-expression and providing opportunities to help children’s development.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
