Historical NoteOn December 9, 1967, Lynda Bird Johnson and Chuck Robb got married in the White House. The hippie counterculture movement emerged as a response to the materialism and consumerism popular during the 1950s. Some hippies were politically active, and ended up getting involved in the antiwar movement, supporting candidates such as Robert F. Kennedy and Eugene McCarthy.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
