Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ wears an 18th Century wig ("for visits to Congress"), a dark-haired wig (identifiable as Abraham Lincoln) ("for Civil Rights speeches"), and another wig (identifiable as Robert E. Lee) ("for trips South"). Hubert Humphrey watches from behind a desk. Caption: “A Wig Helped Luci--Why Not LBJ?”. Artist signature lower right: "Sandeson”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten across the bottom: "For President Johnson with every good wish Bill Sandeson". Handwritten at lower right: [red] “47”.
Historical NoteBecause southern white segregationists formed a significant portion of the Democratic Party until the early 1960s, President Johnson tried not to alienate them earlier in his political career. However, Johnson and the Democratic Party would later lose white southern support with the signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. In this cartoon, Johnson compares himself to Abraham Lincoln when speaking to Civil Rights groups, but at the same time tries to appeal to southern Democrats.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
