Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ uses a camera ("Johnson's Picture of New Panama Treaty") to photograph Uncle Sam standing on the edge of a cliff. Below, a limb extends from the cliff ("End of US Sovereignty"). A small piece of paper “© 1967 by the Chicago Tribune” adhered to lower left. Caption: “Just Another Step Backward, Sam”. Artist signature lower left: "Holland”.

Historical NoteIn January 1964, Panamanians protested the American control of the Panama Canal. In response, Lyndon Johnson began negotiations for a new treaty to eventually transfer control of the canal to the Panamanian government.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
