Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. A US-shaped head with a top hat with stars looks sick because of a wound ("Canal Zone Crisis”) in his neck, which is Central America. LBJ rushes to the scene with a doctor's bag. Caption: “The First Case for the New Doctor”. Artist signature lower right: "Kuekes 1-11-64”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower right: “Sat Jan 11. 1964.”.
Historical NoteIn January 1964, Panamanians protested the American control of the Panama Canal. In response, Lyndon Johnson began negotiations for a new treaty to eventually transfer control of the canal to the Panamanian government.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
