Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ ("Doc LBJ") is dressed like a doctor and looks at thermometer. He says, "A little temperature is to be expected!". Beside him on a hospital bed, is a document ( "Monroe Doctrine") with a face and a sombrero. The document has a large incision ("Dominican Operation") on its stomach and gets a "US" transfusion. The docuement says, "It's great to be alive!". Caption reads: "Back from the Dead!". Artist signature lower right: "Reg Manning [drawing of a cactus]".
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower left: "To President Johnson: (Note - Mom always used to say when a patient grows peevish, he's getting better!) Reg Manning [drawing of a cactus] 9-26-65." Printed at lower left: "McNaught Syndicate, Inc." Handwritten and stamped at bottom: " 3 col. May 6 1965 Mailing".
Historical NoteIn April 1965, the Dominican Revolutionary Party installed a president in the National Palace. In response, President Johnson sent Marines to the Dominican Republic to evacuate American citizens from the country, end the civil war, and establish a conservative Reformist Party government. The Monroe Doctrine was a policy by President James Monroe establishing the western hemisphere as the United States' sphere of interest, warning European nations not to intervene.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
