Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. A large dove ("Congress Doves") crash lands to the ground ("Admit Red China to UN, Recognize Viet Cong, Curb U. S. Military"). Caption reads: "Flight from Reality". Artist signature lower right: 'Warren King".
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten across bottom: "To LBJ - From Warren King", "The News 2-16-66".
Historical NoteAnti-war “doves” included both people who opposed the war ideologically, considering it to be unjust, and people who just believed the war was unwinnable. The number of doves increased over the course of the war. During the Johnson administration, US officials continued to refuse to recognize the People’s Republic of China in favor of Taiwan and did not allow the PRC on the UN Security Council.
