Physical DescriptionPhysical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. A man ("The Public") dressed as a detective looks through magnifier at LBJ. LBJ is also dressed as a detective, and looks at another man ("Sen. Fulbright") dressed as a detective. Fulbright looks at another man ("CIA") dressed as a detective, who should be looking at the globe but who turns to look at Fulbright. All four men and the globe are confused (“?”). Artist signature lower right: "Temple”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower left: “T-P Saturday May 21.” Handwritten at lower center: “35 picas”. Handwritten at lower right: “45”.
Historical NoteThe CIA was heavily involved in the Cold War. J. William Fulbright was the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Lyndon Johnson was scrutinized by the public, and the gap between what the Johnson administration officially told the public and what seemed to be true was called the credibility gap.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
