Historical NoteThe Gun Control Act of 1968 was a response to the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963 and the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy in 1968. Johnson signed the law on October 11, banning the interstate sale of firearms, prohibited certain people such as minors and felons from owning guns, and it restricted the importation of guns. John Q Public is a character often included in political cartoons to depict the average citizen, often portrayed with glasses, a mustache, and a fedora.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
