Physical Description
Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ shows Richard Nixon a room ("Exact Replica of the Oval Office") at the LBJ Library. Behind them on the wall is a painting of LBJ’s operation scar and a portrait (“‘Ugliest Thing I Ever Saw’ LBJ”). There are other artifacts ("Eartha Kitt's Luncheon” and “Jack Valenti's Pillow”) below the paintings. A boy plays with a football under these displays. A hole (“Great Society Crypt") in the ground has a ladder lead down. Another artifact (“Vietnam War-Head Entry Vehicle Recovered from the Gulf of Tonkin”) is next to the other wall. Caption: “And This Is Where Ah Come to Get Away from It All–”. Artist signature lower right: "Draper Hill The Commercial Appeal”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower right: “For President Johnson with grateful thanks. DH. 29 v 71".
Historical NoteThe Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum opened in 1971, two years after Johnson left office. The LBJ Library holds Johnson’s presidential records. It is located on the campus of the University of Texas in Austin, Texas. One exhibit in the LBJ Library is a 7/8 scale replica of the Oval Office.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
