Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ wears a lab coat and pours two chemicals ("Social Rehabilitation of People Living in Decaying Areas" and "Physical Rehabilitation of Blighted Property") into a bottle to make a new chemical ("New Elixir of Life for Cities"). Caption: “The Chemist”. Artist signature lower right: "Kuekes 1-28-66”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower right: “Fri Jan 28 1966”.
Historical NoteThe Housing and Development Act was signed on August 10, 1965 to expand federal housing, build more low income housing, and funded public works projects. On September 9, 1965, Johnson created the Department of Housing and Urban Development to oversee these projects.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
