Physical DescriptionPhysical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing on "I. Klein" letterhead. Ben Franklin holds a "National Center of Cartoon and Graphic Arts" sign. He asks LBJ for: "...home for the works of the precocious brat of the arts...the American cartoonist." A small boy with a pad and a pencil stands near Franklin. Artist signature lower right: "I. Klein N.C.S."
Historical NoteDuring Lyndon Johnson’s presidency, several cartoonists sent him letters urging him to establish a National Cartoon Center, a museum of political cartoons, comic books, newspaper comics, animation, and other cartoons. No permanent museum was ever established, but a few exhibits were produced by a Museum of Graphic Arts in New York City in 1968. Benjamin Franklin created the 1754 "Join or Die" snake, which called for the unification of the American colonies.Additional Details
