Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ sits with five children. One boy asks, “Where do I go to enlist for the war against poverty?". Another boy says, “What this country needs is to have its sense of humor lifted". Another boy says, "And a permanent gallery of cartoon art in America would serve that purpose". One girl says, “Gosh, isn’t he handsome”. Another girl says, “Keep your mind on your work…we’re here to get his support for the National Center of the Cartoon and Graphic Arts”. Morrie Turner "Wee Pals" letterhead. Artist signature lower right: "Morrie”.
Historical NoteDuring Lyndon Johnson’s presidency, several cartoonists sent him letters urging him to establish a National Cartoon Center, a museum of political cartoons, comic books, newspaper comics, animation, and other cartoons. Eventually the Museum of Graphic Arts, a museum without a specific building, was established that covered graphic arts from the fifteenth century to the 1960s.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
