Historical NoteThe credibility gap refers to the public skepticism about the Vietnam War due to a gap in what the Johnson administration officially told the public and what seemed to be true. In this cartoon, Johnson does not use the press conference often, leading to public mistrust.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
