Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ lies in a hospital bed talking to Lady Bird, who is at the foot of the bed with his cigarettes behind her back. A dartboard ("DOC") center hangs on the wall. Caption: “Well, Ladybird, I'll Trade You the South Forty and 200 Head for Just ONE–”. Artist signature lower right: "Carswell 4-72”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower right: "We all wish you a hasty recover, Mr. President". Handwritten at lower right: "With best wishes to you , Mr. President, Jim Carswell. Keswick, Va 5/23/72" “Jefferson Journal, 4-13 Charlottesville, VA”.
Historical NoteLyndon Johnson had a history of health problems, including heart attacks in July 1955 and April 1972, an appendix surgery in 1937, a kidney stone surgery January 1965, gallbladder surgery October 1965, and a benign polyp removal and repair of a scar from the gallbladder surgery in 1966.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
