Historical NoteIn the 1972 presidential election, Richard Nixon ran for his second term against South Dakota Senator George McGovern. Richard J. Daley was the mayor of Chicago and McGovern replaced his delegation in the Democratic National Convention. However, McGovern chose Sargent Shriver, who was an ally of Daley’s and a leader in the War on Poverty, to be his vice president. Shriver was also married to John F. Kennedy’s sister Eunice Kennedy, so McGovern’s choice of vice-president publicly demonstrated a renewal of unity within the Democratic Party.
