Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ, a letter carrier, drops a letter ("Postmaster General Appt.") into the slot on a door ("Politics"). He speaks to a man looking out of another door ("Postal Service Improvements"). A cat says, “Where zip has gone.”. Caption: “No Letter Today--!”. Artist signature lower right: "Vic Runtz ‘65 Bangor Daily News”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower left: [blue] “3 col line Ed Page Thurs”. Handwritten at lower center: [blue] “Bangor Daily News - Sept. 2, 1965”.
Historical NoteAfter World War II, economic prosperity led to an increase in mail volume, making the postal system very costly. The postal office did not have enough infrastructure to handle all the mail people wanted to send.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
