Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. In the window of a post office (“U.S. Post Office Department”) LBJ talks to a man ("Congress"), gesturing toward a sign ("Proposed Postal Rates Airmail 9¢ Regular 6¢ Postcard 5¢"). Other signs (“Notice”, “Snuff”, “[F]lour”, “Wanted”, “Beans”, “New Buggy Whips”, “Soda Crackers Try One”, “Chew Plug”, and “Fresh Salt Pork”) hang around the stand advertising different products. A dog lies in front of the store. Caption: “And Then We'll Be Comparable with Private Industry”. Artist signature lower right: "Ralph Vinson”.

Historical NoteAfter World War II, economic prosperity led to an increase in mail volume, making the postal system very costly. The postal office did not have enough infrastructure to handle all the mail people wanted to send.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
