Historical NoteIn 1960, Johnson ran for the Democratic nomination for president. He had more establishment Democrat support than John F. Kennedy, who was leading the polls when he entered the race in July 1960. When Kennedy offered Johnson the VP spot on the ticket, the two men compromised and the Kennedy-Johnson ticket won in the 1960 presidential election.Additional Details
