Physical DescriptionOriginal 4-frame cartoon drawing. Frame 1: A man sleeps and a cat watches a show (“‘The Cowboy’s Problem’ Starring Lyndon Johnson”) on a television (“Campaign-Tone TV”). Frame 2: LBJ tries to lasso (“Civil Rights Action”) a herd of cattle (“Non-South Delegates”). Additional text at lower center: “…How to rope the new herd…”. Frame 3: LBJ turns around and sees another herd of cattle (“Southern Delegates”) run away. Additional text at lower left: “…Without stampeding the one he already has?”. Frame 4: LBJ’s horse says, “It’s the only way you can win the gal, podner!”, and thinks about a woman (“Dem. Nomination”). Caption: “Adult Political Western”. Historical NoteAfter President Kennedy proposed civil rights legislation in spring 1963 and President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act in 1964, many conservative white southerners that otherwise agreed on Democrat domestic policy left the Democratic Party.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
