Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ shakes hands with a man (“Maine”) with a head in the shape of Maine. A woman (identifiable as Margaret Chase Smith) stands in the crowd watching. Overhead is a banner: ("Welcome to Vacationland! Ideal for Pleasure and/or Business"). A cat falls and says “Ooops!” as it holds a sign (“November is Coming”). Caption: “Hail to the Chief!”. Artist signature lower right: "Vic Runtz news ‘66”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower left: [blue] “3 col Ed Page Sat”. Handwritten at lower center: [blue] “Bangor Daily News, Aug. 20, 1966”.
Historical NoteIn 1966, the year this cartoon was made, the two senators representing Maine were Margaret Chase Smith and Edmund Muskie. In 1964, Smith ran for president during the Republican primaries, and was defeated by Barry Goldwater. In 1968, Muskie would run as vice president under Hubert Humphrey.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
