Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ sits in a chair before a TV camera smiling down at a small boy ("McCarthy") who is reaching up to wave at the camera. McCarthy holds a sign ("Equal Time!"). A small piece of paper “The Hartford Times” adhered to lower right. Caption: “I Want to Get into the Picture, Too!”. Artist signature lower right: "Ed Valtman ‘67”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower center: “To LBJ with best wishes Ed Valtman Jan. 11. 1968”. Handwritten at upper right: [circle] “Dec. 28”.
Historical NoteLyndon Johnson was very involved with the media, but unlike Dwight Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy, he had less televised news conferences and more informal interviews. President Johnson paid close attention to the media as well and kept three televisions in the Oval Office. Minnesota Senator Eugene McCarthy ran for president in 1968 during the Democratic primaries as an antiwar candidate, announcing his campaign on November 30, 1967.
