Historical NoteJ. William Fulbright was a Democratic senator from Arkansas. He was the head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and supported detente policies. Robert F. Kennedy was a senator from New York that spoke against Johnson's Vietnam policy. McCarthy, Kennedy, and Fulbright were prominent critics of the Johnson administration’s Vietnam policy. Minnesota Senator Eugene McCarthy ran for president in 1968 during the Democratic primaries as an antiwar candidate, announcing his campaign on November 30, 1967. The Antiwar Movement (1964-1973) emerged in response to the Vietnam War and included many activist groups such as the Students for a Democratic Society and the Yippies and used tactics such as mass demonstrations, sit-ins, teach-ins, and guerilla theater.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
